Jason Theriot served as historian on a contracted Historic Resource Study for Harry S Truman National Historic Site which focused on former President Truman as an Elder Statesman. Jason researched Harry S Truman’s activities during his years in retirement, 1953-1972. As a leader in the Democratic Party, Truman yielded considerable influence as he helped various candidates seek office. Politicians sought him out for advice. When major events occurred, he regularly commented by issuing statements, wrote letters, or spoke directly to reporters. Summarizing his activities and plain-spoken opinions as Elder Statesman, Truman: The Elder Statesman (National Park Service 2023) helped re-invigorate an already superior NPS interpretive program and gave the park a new perspective into the enduring legacy of Harry S Truman.
